Alexander McQueen
Rebellious but romantic, iconic but ultra-modern, elegant but inspired by British punk iconography…It is all about Alexander McQueen, the legendary fashion house that was founded in 1992. The father of the brand, Lee Alexander McQueen, was driven by a highly personal vision and a respect for both time-honored craftsmanship and experimentation. Famous for his highly original designs that combine artistry with unbeatable technical ability, the brand is extremely popular among world-famous celebrities and royalty. For many years, Alexander McQueen has retained the title of the red-carpet designer, dressing Hollywood stars, like Madonna, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sandra Bullock, Lady Gaga, Cameron Diaz, Rihanna, Elle Fanning, and many-many more famous names.
The designs from Alexander McQueen are a constant confrontation between the feminine and the masculine, love and fight, human and device, that results in vivid styles with exclusive, one-of-a-kind details. The brand borrows elements from the Gothic, Roman, and Victorian eras and frequently incorporates dark colors, heavy fabrics and fragile embellishments like lace and embroidery. Among the most famous McQueen's motifs is the skull, which can be seen on the brand’s accessories, such as bags, jewelry pieces and eyewear. The skull-patterned scarves and oversized sneakers are among the most well-known and sought-after Alexander McQueen designs.
About
In 2001, the Alexander McQueen Fashion House joined Kering, the leading luxury group that manages the renowned Houses in Fashion, Leather Goods, Jewelry, Watches and Eyewear. The Alexander McQueen eyewear collections are synonymous with modern British couture, merging modernity and tradition and celebrating the beauty of the unexpected. Inspired by the house’s most iconic codes and a disruptive approach to timeless sophistication, the seasonal line-up includes everything from bold and distinctive shapes to newly designed elegant frames, built on the juxtaposition between rebellion and romance, delicacy and strength. Each pair of glasses is a sophisticated symphony of opposites.
Since taking the reins of the label in 2010, Sarah Burton has made outstanding contributions to the world of fashion. To say that Burton knows how to create a jaw-dropping, memorable design is to say nothing. The designer, who was honored with the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti International Award at the CFDA Fashion Awards, has presented some of the most memorable runway looks. Whimsical and ultra-feminine, her designs have earned a global fan base, especially in Hollywood where artists from all sides of the entertainment industry have looked to Alexander McQueen for their most important events. Celebrities aficionados of McQueens glasses are Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Cate Blanchett, Kim Kardashian, Natalie Portman, Sarah Jessica Parker and other Stars.
History
Alexander McQueen was born in East London in 1969 and improved his craft while working as a tailoring apprentice on Savile Row. When the young designer graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art, he created his first collection entitled "Jack the Ripper Stalking His Victims.” McQueen's often aggressive and violent themes divided audiences, while making his collections memorable and thought-provoking. The first collection was bought by the influential fashion stylist Isabella Blow, who played a crucial role in helping McQueen launch his fashion career. From here McQueen continued to push boundaries in everything he created, taking inspiration from subjects such as his Scottish heritage or his passion for scuba diving, as well as from art, pop culture, and history.
Alexander McQueen died from suicide in 2010 at the age of 40, shortly after the death of his mother. Despite his unfortunate death, the brand’s success continues up to this day, with current creative director Sarah Burton at the helm. Since taking the reins, Burton has produced unique, filigree collections with a focus on handcraft, establishing herself as a highly professional designer with both technical and artisanal expertise. Her red carpet achievements speak for themselves. Today, Sarah Burton supervises the creative direction and development of all the brand’s collections: men’s and women’s ready-to-wear and accessories, including sunglasses and optical frames.
